Home of the Irish Aer Corps, Museum & Heritage Project.
At 14 years of age and with a keen interest in aircraft & particularly military planes, I wrote to the Minister of Defence requesting a visit to Casement Aerodrome which was duly granted. I was privileged on that occasion to visit on a day when there was a lot of flying activity and little restriction, so I was able to move about the hangers & aprons with a degree of freedom. it was a young boys trill to be able to be up close and personal with the Irish Aer Corps aircraft of the day.
Over fifty years later, I wrote again but this time to the curator of the Aer Corps Museum, Cpl. Micheal Whelan who graciously granted a return visit. On the day of my visit, my personal guide was Gerry Mc Cann, a former Aer Corps member and very well briefed on the history and technologies of the museum aircraft. My visit lasted two hours and was immensely informative and exciting to see the display from Chipmunk, Jet Provost to Vampire and Fouga Magister. There was also an extremely well preserved Alouette amongst a variety of other craft and heritage displays.
I am very grateful to both Michael & Gerry for their time and would hope that their efforts to keep the museum open and growing will be rewarded, there is such a potential for a major aeronautical history museum in Ireland, hope you enjoy some of the pictures below from the day…
